Reestablishing Timeline Selection
Use right-click when dragging media to the timeline from Project Media, the Explorer window, or a Windows folder to add only the video or audio portion of the media file. Back to list
Hold CTRL+ALT+Shift when you click an event to both split it and trim part of it to create a timeline hole in your media event. Back to list
Select multiple events and drag a fade on any of them to create fads of identical lengths in all of the events. Back to list
Drag a fade into or out of any video event and drop a transition into the fade envelope to create a transition at the beginning or end of the event, instead of simply between two events. Back to list
Cut away from a person talking while the dialog continues, or start someone’s dialog before you cut to that person, to create visual interest in dialog scenes or for smooth and interesting transitions between scenes. Back to list
Right-click on a fade envelope to choose the shape of the envelope. This gives you some control over the rate at which you fade into or out of an event. Back to list
Explore ways to change the height of tracks on the VEGAS timeline. Minimize, maximize, or customize the height of individual tracks, or control the height of all tracks simultaneously. Back to list
Double-click the Cursor Position text box and type in the exact timecode where you want to set the timeline cursor, or type in a number of frames to move it from its current position. Back to list
Use the numeric keypad to move selected clips to the left or right on the timeline, by frames or by pixel width. Back to list
Snapping is usually an invaluable feature of editing, but if you need to, hold the Shift key while moving timeline events to override snapping. Back to list
Pressing the space bar to start and top project playback only works if the timeline window has focus. If a different window has focus, press CTRL plus the space bar to start the project playing and to stop playing. Back to list
Double-click the title bar of the FX Plugin window to resize the window to fit the size the effect controls. Back to list
Press D on the keyboard to cycle through the editing tools. Press CTRL-D to return to the normal edit tool from any other edit tool. Back to list
Move the contents of a video event left or right without changing the position or length of the event on the timeline. Back to list
Use keyboard shortcuts to instantly hide or show various elements of the user interface, such as plugin windows or track headers. Back to list
Use both mouse buttons to restrict the Selection Tool box size adjustment to width-only or height-only. Back to list
Learn quick and easy ways to edit video precisely to the beat of music tracks. It’s great for editing music videos, events, commercials, and other types of video with music soundtracks. Back to list
Split the Video Preview window between a live frame from your timeline and a reference frame. Bypass FX on your live clip or use a reference frame saved to your preview clipboard. Back to list
Slip video within an event without changing position or length of the event on the timeline, or move the event on the timeline while the video within it stays in its original position. Slide an edit point between two events without moving the location of either event. Back to list
Use the numeric keypad to select and trim event edges. Use 7 and 9 to cycle between event edges, and 4 and 6 or 1 and 3 to trim the edges. Use 8 and 2 to move events up and down between tracks. Back to list
Use the Alt key to turn letter keys into hot keys for super-fast access to menus and menu items. Back to list
Use CTRL-click to solo one track while simultaneously un-soloing any other soloed tracks. This technique works on video and audio tracks. Back to list
Ever accidentally lose the loop region you selection on the timeline? Use the Backspace to cycle back through up to five timeline time selections. Back to list
